Tax return dates
The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, and the deadlines for Self Assessment returns are:
|31 January||Submitting tax return by post|
|31 October||Submitting tax return online.|
Paying tax you owe
Any tax owed for the previous tax year must be paid by 31 January, whether you’ve submitted your return by post or online. For example, you would pay your outstanding tax for 6 Apr 2014 – 5 Apr 2015, no later than 31 January 2016.
Late tax returns
HM Revenue & Customs levy a £100 fine on late submissions, unless you can provide a reasonable explanation as to why the tax return was filed after the deadline.
